Finebaum on Alabama vs. FSU in playoff: âPut them in!â
Florida State remains unbeaten heading into tonight’s game vs. Florida, but SEC Network analyst Paul Finebaum said Saturday that he doesn’t believe the Seminoles should be a lock over one-loss Alabama in the College Football Playoff pecking order.
During a panel discussion on SEC Nation Saturday, fellow analyst Roman Harper noted that the CFP committee should take the season-ending injury to FSU quarterback Jordan Travis into consideration when determining the four playoff teams. Finebaum responded that it’s pretty clear the No. 8 Crimson Tide is a better team than the No. 4 Seminoles despite a worse record, and would be even more evident should Alabama topple (presumably) No. 1 Georgia in the SEC championship game.
“This is easy — Alabama should get in,” Finebaum said. “I mean, it is absurd to keep using this phrase ‘deserving.’ … It’s the four best teams in the country. Let’s quit trying to make this complicated.
“… Alabama and Florida State is not a difficult conversation. Florida State’s best win was against LSU on the first weekend. Move them out of the way. I don’t care what their record is. I had an analyst on the (Paul Finebaum) show this week, (who said), ‘They’ve got to go in.’ No, they don’t have to go in. Alabama would have just beaten Georgia in the state of Georgia. Put them in!”
Finebaum did acknowledge that Alabama vs. Texas would be a “difficult conversation” for the CFP committee if both have one loss. The Longhorns beat the Crimson Tide 34-24 in Tuscaloosa in Week 2.
No. 2 Ohio State faces No. 3 Michigan on Saturday, while No. 4 Washington faces No. 6 Oregon in the Pac-12 championship game next Friday. So that would presumably take care of two teams between a 12-1 Alabama team and the playoff.
The Seminoles, who are about a touchdown favorite to beat Florida and likely will be favored to beat Louisville in the ACC championship game, remain the great obstacle, however.
